Stockholm is a Fairtrade City

Stockholm shall be a sustainable city; environmentally, socially and economically. By purchasing Fairtrade products, we contribute to fair living conditions globally.

The City of Stockholm has a long tradition of being  a humane city and a role model in sustainable development. It became a Fairtrade City in May 2016 – which is proof that this work has produced results.

Fairtrade City is a diploma awarded to municipalities that are committed to fair trade and ethical consumption. The purpose of Fairtrade City is to bring several actors together in a municipality, in order to collaborate for fairer trade. By acting locally, the City can contribute globally to improving conditions for producers in countries with widespread poverty.

There are many reasons why the Fairtrade City diploma is important for Stockholm: One is to acknowledge the fact that more and more Stockholmers are showing a high level of social engagement and want to contribute to social and ecological sustainability, in Stockholm and in the world.

What does the work as a Fairtrade City involve?

The City of Stockholm has adopted several policy documents that steer its sustainability efforts, such as the Environment Programme, the Climate Action Plan, and the Procurement Programme.

Stockholm’s commitment to Fairtrade City aims to increase awareness and understanding among employees and residents about sustainable consumption and fair trade.

Through its Fairtrade City work, the city contributes to fulfilling the goals of its Environment Programme and the global objectives outlined in Agenda 2030. The following goals are particularly relevant:

  • Goal 12: Responsible consumption and production
  • Goal 17: Partnerships for the goals
  • Goal 1: No poverty

Fairtrade City is also part of the city’s efforts to ensure a just and inclusive transition in its environmental and climate work. The Environment Programme includes a goal for a fair and inclusive transition, which is supported by two sub-goals:

  • The City’s operations reinforce a just transition.
  • Stockholmers are involved in the transition.

Organisation

The Fairtrade City Stockholm initiative is led and coordinated by the City Executive Office.
