Parking
Parking facilities take up space and affect the city’s ability to build housing and create room for other essential functions. How the City of Stockholm plans its parking facilities is a key element of its commitment to creating a sustainable, growing urban environment.
For people looking to park in Stockholm, there are several options available, both municipal and private.
Parking on public space
The Transport Department is responsible for parking facilities on public space. This is property owned by the municipality, and primarily consists of streets, pavements, parks and adjacent public spaces.
Parking on private property
All property that is not owned by the municipality is considered to be private. In this case, it is the owner of the property that decides whether to permit parking on the property. Parking on private property and in multi-storey car parks is managed by various property owners, private operators or Stockholm Parkering AB, a municipally owned company. Private parking facilities typically display signs that indicate which parking firm is monitoring the facility. If the facility is unregulated, there is usually no signage.
Fees and regulations
Decisions regarding parking fees and regulations for parking on public space are made by the Transport Committee and the City Council. The Transport Department is responsible for signage, parking enforcement and payment systems such as parking meters, as well as agreements with suppliers that authorise them to sell parking on public space.
Up-to-date information on parking regulations, fees, zones, and residential parking is available on the parkering.stockholm website.
Policy documents
The annual budget, adopted by the City Council, is the overriding governing document for all the City’s operations. Supplementary policy documents establish and clarify how the City’s operations are to operate and how they should be run.
Most of these policy documents, including the Parking Plan mentioned below, are only available in Swedish.
The Parking Plan
The governing document for parking in Stockholm is the Parking Plan, which is part of the City’s Urban Mobility Strategy. The plan outlines how parking can be used as a strategic tool to support the City’s overarching goals. These include reducing climate impact, improving mobility and accessibility, and creating attractive public places. It presents a common orientation for the City’s work with parking and lists the measures that need to be implemented in order to help achieve the City’s broader objectives.
