Cemeteries Department

The Cemeteries Department is responsible for funeral operations in Stockholm and manages Skogskyrkogården (The Woodland Cemetery), a World Heritage Site.

The Cemeteries Department conducts funeral and service operations with strict ethical requirements and is responsible for cemeteries with high cultural heritage values.

The Cemeteries Department is responsible for

  • graves and memorial groves
  • different funeral customs and forms of burial
  • well-maintained and accessible cemeteries with high cultural heritage value
  • chapels for different kinds of funeral ceremonies
  • information and guidance on funeral matters
  • maintenance and service of graves
  • the Skogskyrkogården World Heritage Site

The elected representatives on the Cemeteries Committee make decisions on how the City should work in this area. The Cemeteries Department must then implement the Committee’s decisions.

Organisation

The work of the Cemeteries Department is led by Head of Department
Svante Borg. The Department consists of four divisions with responsibility for operations within each area.

Administrative Division

The Division is responsible for

  • IT
  • finance
  • security issues
  • committee administration
  • registry and document archive.

The Division also includes a Head of HR, Head of Communications and Operational Controller.

Booking and Burial Rights Division

The Division is responsible for matters including

  • burial rights issues
  • administration concerning maintenance of graves
  • bookings of ceremonies, cremations and graves, etc.

Funeral and Service Division

The Division is responsible for

  • exhumation
  • concession of graves
  • burial and restoration after burial in the Department’s eleven cemeteries.

The brief also includes the maintenance of public areas and planting, as well as the maintenance of graves in accordance with the customer’s maintenance assignment.

Chapel and Crematorium Division

The Division is responsible for

  • crematorium operations at Råcksta and Nya krematoriet
  • operations in the Department’s 13 chapels and urn burial sites.

The Division is also responsible for the Department’s property portfolio.
