Collaborations

The City of Stockholm works together with business, academia and other partners both in Sweden and internationally to develop Stockholm.

Through collaborations, we can gather capabilities, competencies and resources and reach further to create new solutions and services.

Together within the international networks and with academia, other actors in the public sector, business and civil society, the city has a number of strategically important collaborations.

Strategic collaborations and partnerships

The City of Stockholm has agreements on strategic collaboration with all major universities and colleges in the area of research, education, development and innovation that contributes to business development and innovation work.

Partnerships between the city and KTH include a number of different collaborations, in education, research and innovation.

The collaboration between the city and Stockholm University focuses on climate and the environment, social sustainability and culture.

The partnership aims to achieve good and equal health in Stockholm. Particular focus is on prevention and prevention. 

The City of Stockholm's collaborations

With more than 100 partners in the private and public sectors, AI Sweden aims to generate tools and resources to increase the pace of using artificial intelligence (AI) for society, competitiveness and for the citizens of Sweden.

Through the partnership in AI Sweden, the City of Stockholm has access to a broad network, projects and research that are at the forefront and the opportunity to start their own innovative projects.

The City of Stockholm is a strategic partner of the Digital Futures research center, whose vision is to shape an economically, environmentally and socially sustainable society through digital transformation.

Founded by the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Research Institutes of Sweden AB (RISE), Stockholm University (SU), with a focus on leading research, empowering people and building community, it creates conditions for research and networking between industry, academia and the public sector.

In response to the growing gap between the rich and the poor, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) launched the Champion Mayors for Inclusive Growth initiative in March 2016.

It is a coalition of leaders committed to tackling inequalities and promoting more inclusive economic growth in cities. The City of Stockholm participates in the initiative through the Mayor of Finance.

Openlab is a creative center for solving societal challenges. The goal is to create the conditions for innovative solutions that improve the quality of life for Stockholm's residents. Openlab involves students, companies, researchers, residents

The vision is that by 2030, Sweden will have accessibility and mobility in the metropolitan regions that contributes to achieving the sustainability goals and at the same time meets the needs of broad user groups through new accessibility services.

The programme is led by the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) and the Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute (VTI). The City of Stockholm is represented on the Board by the Director of Innovation.

One of the major challenges in the work with the smart city is to share data between the municipality's various actors and with external partners in a secure, structured and efficient way.

Within Smart City Labs, municipalities and regions will have a broader collaboration to build the technical and organizational conditions required. The City of Stockholm is one of the municipalities participating in the Smart City Labs collaboration, which welcomes all of Sweden's municipalities and regions.

Europe's leading tech hub is run through the Electrum Foundation, Kista Science City as an innovation collaboration between companies, the public sector and academia to develop Kista. Kista Science City is run in company form as a subsidiary of Electrum.

The City of Science Foundation is a collaboration with the city, academia and the business community with the aim of strengthening Stockholm's competitiveness in life science and the location Hagastaden.

 

The Stockholm Academic Forum is a collaborative organisation between all 18 universities and colleges in Stockholm and the City of Stockholm.

Every year, the House of Science receives tens of thousands of school pupils and teachers in three different locations with the aim of creating interest and knowledge in science, technology and mathematics. It is run by KTH and Stockholm University in collaboration with the education administration in Stockholm.

The Scientific Council is a common forum where city officials discuss and assimilate the expertise of leading researchers in the city's areas of activity.

In 2024, a newly created council will gather to exchange experiences and knowledge in order to support the city's environmental program.

Viable Cities is a strategic innovation program with a focus on the transition to climate-neutral and sustainable cities. The programme's mission is climate-neutral cities by 2030 with a good life for all within the planet's boundaries.

Viable Cities is led by the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) and brings together around 50 actors from several different research fields, business, the public sector and civil society. The City of Stockholm is represented on the Board through the City Management Office.

Membership of international organisations and networks

One way for the city to participate in international collaborations is through membership in international organizations and networks. Through its membership, the city is naturally involved in international processes concerning the city's priority areas.
